The NinjaTrader 8 Setup Checklist: What to Configure Before Your First Bot Goes Live
You bought the bots. You've got the login for the membership portal, a login for your data feed, and a folder of import files sitting in your Downloads. That's the easy part. What actually determines whether your first live session goes smoothly — or ends with a bot that won't connect, or an order that fires on the wrong account — is the twenty minutes of setup nobody tells you to slow down for. NinjaTrader 8 rewards traders who configure it once, correctly, over traders who click through and hope.
This is the checklist we walk new members through before their bots ever touch a funded account. No coding required — just a deliberate order of operations.
Start With the Platform, Not the Bots
Before you import a single strategy file, get NinjaTrader 8 itself squared away on a Windows machine. A few things matter more than people expect:
- Run it on Windows, not a Mac emulator or a browser wrapper. NinjaTrader 8 is a native Windows application, and bots behave more predictably on a real Windows install than on a virtual machine you're also using for email and Zoom.
- Turn off sleep and update interruptions. An automated bot that's mid-position when your PC goes to sleep or reboots for a Windows update isn't automated anymore — it's abandoned. Set power settings to "never sleep" and pause automatic updates during market hours.
- Confirm your NinjaTrader license and account type match what the bots expect. Sim account first, always — more on that below.
If you're running this on a machine that also handles your day job, a VPS is worth the extra step. A bot running while you're in a meeting only works if the machine underneath it actually stays on.
Connect the Right Data Feed and Brokerage
NinjaTrader 8 needs a live data connection and a brokerage connection, and they're not always the same thing. Before you go further:
- Confirm your data feed is streaming real-time futures data — not delayed data, which will make every one of the 13 bots (ORB, Snapback, Scalper, 10 EMA, NR7, Volume Spike, and the rest) look like it's misfiring when it isn't.
- Link the brokerage connection tied to the funded account you're actually trading. Running accounts across more than one prop firm — Apex, Lucid, BluSky, TakeProfit — double-check which connection is active before you arm anything. Wrong account, right bot, is still a wrong trade.
- Verify your contract symbols (NQ, ES, MES) are mapped correctly. A mismatched symbol is one of the most common reasons a bot "does nothing" on day one.
Install and Configure Your Bot Portfolio
Once the platform and the data are solid, bring in the bots themselves using the Bot Portfolio Builder. This is where the "no coding required" promise actually gets tested — the building is done, but the configuration still needs your attention:
- Import strategy files one at a time and confirm each loads without an error before adding the next. Stacking five imports and troubleshooting all of them together turns a five-minute job into an hour.
- Set position sizing and contract counts to match the account you're actually trading, not a default template. A bot sized for a $150K account and run on a $50K evaluation account is a fast way to blow a daily loss limit.
- Running more than one bot? Use the Bot Portfolio Analyzer to check for overlap before you go live — three bots taking the same trade at once isn't diversification, it's triple the risk on one signal.
- Coordinating multiple funded accounts? Set up the Trade Copier here too — confirm it's mapped to the correct destination accounts (up to 20) before you trust it to mirror a live trade.
Run It in Sim Before It Touches Funded Capital
Every checklist above still ends the same way: simulation first. Run the full lineup — data feed, bot portfolio, sizing — in Sim 101 for at least a few sessions. You're not testing whether the bots work; 4.5 years of backtest data already answered that. You're testing whether your setup works. Sim time is where a mismapped symbol or a sleep setting you forgot to change shows up — before it costs you a funded account instead of a screenshot.
The Pre-Flight Checklist
Before you flip any bot to your live or funded connection, run through this in order:
- Windows sleep and updates disabled during market hours
- Data feed connected and streaming real-time (not delayed)
- Correct brokerage connection active for the account you're trading
- Contract symbols mapped correctly
- Bot(s) imported, position sizing matched to account size
- Portfolio Analyzer checked for overlapping signals
- Trade Copier destination accounts verified (if applicable)
- Sim-tested for multiple sessions with no surprises
Nobody fails a funded account because their bot's strategy logic was wrong. They fail because the setup underneath it was rushed. Get this checklist right once, and every session after it runs the way it's supposed to — systems doing the work while you keep your day job.
If you'd rather have someone walk the whole build with you instead of piecing it together solo, the 30-Day Bot Workshop ($199) covers this setup step by step alongside portfolio strategy and funded-account discipline — and every membership starts with a 14-day free trial so you can run this exact checklist before you commit to a subscription. Start your trial, get the platform configured right the first time, and let the bots do what they were built to do.
