Set and Forget Is a Myth: The 20-Minute Weekly Check Every Automated Trader Skips

October 12, 2026

"Set and forget" is the line every automation pitch leans on, and it's half true. A bot doesn't need you to watch every candle, place every order, or sit through the open with coffee going cold. But "set and forget" was never supposed to mean "set and ignore" — and the gap between those two is where funded accounts quietly go sideways. The fix isn't more screen time. It's twenty minutes a week, spent on the things a running bot can't check for itself.

This isn't the pre-open technical boot-up — platform updates, data feed status, a test alert. That ritual matters and we've already laid it out as its own routine. This is the check most automated traders skip entirely, because none of it throws an error message. The bot keeps firing trades whether or not any of this is still true.

1. Did your bots start trading the same setup this week?

A breakout bot and a mean-reversion bot can run side by side for months without overlapping — until a regime shift lines them up on the same side of the same move. You won't see it in either bot's individual log. You'll see it in your equity curve, where two "diversified" strategies suddenly post identical red days. Pull up the portfolio view once a week and actually look at correlation, not just P&L. If you haven't run this check before, the Bot Portfolio Analyzer's overlap report does the comparison for you in under a minute.

2. Does your position size still match your actual account?

Bots size positions off the rules you gave them on day one. They don't know your balance moved. A strong week pads your drawdown cushion and can justify stepping up; a rough stretch tightens it and can mean you're now running size that assumes a cushion you no longer have. This is less about the bot and entirely about whether the inputs you set it up with are still accurate — automated stops and trailing drawdown only protect you from what they were told to protect against.

3. Where do you actually stand on your evaluation or payout clock?

Apex, Lucid, BluSky, and TakeProfit each calculate the consistency rule and minimum trading days a little differently, and all of it is running in the background whether you check it or not. A week spent on autopilot can quietly put you one session away from satisfying a minimum-days requirement — or one away from breaking a consistency rule you forgot was tightening as your balance grew. Twenty minutes is enough to know, before Monday, exactly how many sessions stand between you and your next payout request.

4. What's on the economic calendar for the week ahead?

Your bots don't read a calendar. CPI, FOMC, and NFP prints can turn a normal session into a spread-widening, stop-hunting mess that a backtest never modeled, because the backtest was built on normal sessions. Glance at the week's high-impact releases and decide now which bots you're pausing and when — not at 7:58 the morning of, scrambling to find the override button.

5. Did you override anything — and why?

This is the one that actually tests whether "set and forget" is working. Open your trade log and count the manual interventions from the past seven days. Every override is a moment you trusted your gut over the system you built and backtested specifically because your gut is the less reliable one under pressure. One override isn't a crisis. A pattern of them means the real maintenance item isn't the bot — it's whether you're still willing to let it run.

Twenty minutes, not zero

None of these five checks requires touching a chart during market hours. None of them is a reason to override a live trade. They're a once-a-week gut check that keeps the system you built actually matched to the account, the firm's rules, and the week ahead — which is the entire point of automating in the first place. If you're still building that system, the 30-Day Bot Workshop walks you through setting up a bot portfolio correctly the first time, so your weekly check stays twenty minutes instead of turning into a Saturday spent untangling why three bots are suddenly moving together.

Hypothetical Performance Disclosure: Hypothetical performance results have many inherent limitations, some of which are described below. No representation is being made that any account will or is likely to achieve profits or losses similar to those shown; in fact, there are frequently sharp differences between hypothetical performance results and the

In addition, hypothetical trading does not involve financial risk, and no hypothetical trading record can completely account for the impact of financial risk of actual trading. for example, the ability to withstand losses or to adhere to a particular trading program in spite of trading losses are material points which can also adversely affect actual trading results. There are numerous other factors related to the markets in general or to the implementation of any specific trading program which cannot be fully accounted for in the preparation of hypothetical performance results and all which can adversely affect trading results.
