NinjaTrader 8 Setup Mistakes That Sink a Funded Eval Before the First Trade Goes Live

August 27, 2026

You bought the bots, you're excited to trade the open without babysitting every candle, and you're two days from starting your evaluation. Then you fire up NinjaTrader 8 for the first time and something's off — an order fills at the wrong size, a bot fires on the wrong contract, or the platform freezes mid-session and you miss the setup entirely. None of that is a strategy problem. It's a setup problem, and setup problems are the ones that sink evals before a single trade has a chance to prove anything.

Here are the mistakes we see most often when traders move from "installed" to "live," and how to close each one before your evaluation clock starts.

Trading the wrong account without realizing it

NinjaTrader makes it easy to have your funded eval account, a sim account, and a data-only connection all open in the same workspace. The fastest way to blow an evaluation is to arm a bot on the sim account thinking it's live, or worse, arm it on the wrong funded account when you're running more than one. Before every session, confirm the account name and balance showing in the Control Center match the account you intend to trade — not just the account number, the actual dollar balance. A five-second glance catches this every time; a rushed morning doesn't.

Contract specs that don't match your firm's rules

Apex, Lucid, BluSky, and TakeProfit don't all score drawdown, contract limits, or position sizing the same way. A bot configured with position sizing that worked fine on a $50K sim account can violate your specific firm's max contract rule the moment you go live, especially if you're running more than one bot on the same account. Check your firm's contract limit and drawdown methodology against your bot's configured size before the first session — not after a rule violation flags it for you.

Data feed and connection settings nobody checks twice

A bot is only as good as the data it's reacting to. Two setup mistakes show up constantly here: a data feed subscription that lapsed or wasn't renewed, and a connection left on a demo data feed instead of your live NinjaTrader 8 license. Both look identical on the surface — charts populate, prices move — until you notice the tick data is delayed or the session disconnects overnight and your bot never reconnects. If you're running unattended, a VPS with an automatic reconnect script isn't optional; it's the difference between a bot that trades a full session and one that silently sits idle while you assume it's working.

Skipping the sim-to-live checklist

The 30-Day Bot Workshop exists because "install, connect, go live" skips the step that actually catches setup mistakes: running the bot in sim for enough sessions to confirm it's taking the trades you expect, at the size you expect, on the account you expect. A single sim session isn't enough — you want to see it behave correctly through at least one choppy day and one trending day before you trust it with eval capital. If you skipped straight from installation to a funded account, go back and run that sim window now. It's cheaper than a reset fee.

Backtest settings that don't match how you'll actually trade

Our 4.5 years of backtest data is only useful if the settings you backtested are the settings you're running live — same session times, same contract, same risk per trade. A common mistake is tweaking a bot's stop or target after backtesting to "improve" it, then going live without re-verifying the change against the historical data. That's not a tested strategy anymore; it's a guess wearing a backtest's clothes. Any change to entry, stop, or target rules means the backtest needs to run again before it counts toward your confidence in the setup.

The five-minute pre-session check that prevents all of this

Before every trading session: confirm the account and balance in Control Center, confirm your data feed is live and current, confirm each bot's contract size against your firm's rules, and confirm no settings have drifted since your last sim test. It takes less time than pouring coffee, and it's the difference between an eval that fails on a strategy decision and one that fails on a setup mistake you could have caught at 8:00 AM.

Getting the platform right is step one — passing the eval is what the bots and the workshop are built for. If you're still working through NinjaTrader 8 setup, the 30-Day Bot Workshop walks the whole install-to-live process with a Bot Portfolio Builder and Analyzer built in, so you catch these mistakes before they cost you an evaluation.
