A Futures Trader's Guide to Automation

Trade the plan you built, not your emotions.

You design a portfolio of bots, stress-test it against 4.5 years of real market data, and let it execute on NinjaTrader 8 - in your own account, in a funded account, or in twenty of them at once. That's the whole idea.

01 Why traders automate

The strategy is rarely the problem. The execution is.

Most traders who struggle are not missing an edge. They are missing the ability to run the same edge, the same way, on a Tuesday afternoon after two losses. Hesitation on the entry. Moving the stop. Adding size to get it back. Taking the trade that was not in the plan because the screen has been quiet for an hour.

A bot does not do any of that. It takes the setup it was built to take, sizes the position the way you told it to, and stops when it hits the limit you set. Whether that limit came from a prop firm's rulebook or from your own decision about what you are willing to lose in a day makes no difference to the software.

That is the case for automation, and it holds regardless of whose money is in the account.

The hardest part of trading a system is not building it. It is running it unchanged during losing streaks.

02 Choosing your capital

Your own account, a funded account, or both.

Automation does not care where the capital comes from. But the two paths have real differences worth understanding before you pick one, and plenty of traders end up running both.

Your own cash account

You keep 100% of the profit. No profit split, no payout schedule, no withdrawal minimums.

No rules but yours. No trailing drawdown, no consistency requirement, no news lockouts, no daily loss limit unless you set one.

Trade any session and hold through any event you choose.

Requires real capital up front, and losses come out of your own equity.

Works with any futures-enabled broker that connects to NinjaTrader 8: NinjaTrader Brokerage, AMP, Optimus, Interactive Brokers, Tradovate and others.

A funded account

Low cost to start. Evaluations begin around $28.

Losses beyond the evaluation fee are not yours. A failed account costs the reset, not your savings.

You can run many of them at once, which is what makes the Trade Copier worth having.

You give up a share of profits and accept the firm's rules: drawdown caps, daily loss limits, consistency requirements.

Payouts follow the firm's schedule, not yours.

A common pattern: prove the portfolio in evaluation accounts where a mistake is cheap, then run the same portfolio in a cash account once you trust it. The tools are identical either way - the only thing that changes is which rule set you tell the Portfolio Builder to respect.

03 How it works

Four pieces, one platform.

The bot

A strategy written as code. It watches for a specific condition, enters, manages the position, and exits, without asking you. Push Button Trading offers 13 of them, each built for a different market condition: trending, ranging, breakout, scalping and more.

The setting

The same bot configured differently: instrument, session, contract size, stop distance, target. 586 pre-configured settings ship ready to deploy, each backtested across 4.5 years of real market data.

The portfolio

Several bots and settings running together so that no single market condition determines your month. A breakout bot has a bad week in chop. A mean-reversion bot has a bad week in a trend. Held together, they smooth each other.

The platform

NinjaTrader 8, on Windows. Free to download. Most traders run it on a VPS for $20 to $50 a month so the bots keep working when the laptop is closed.

04 The case for a portfolio

One bot is hit or miss. Six or eight is a portfolio.

01

Execution never varies

The 400th trade is placed exactly like the first. No fatigue, no emotions, no revenge entry.

02

You know the drawdown before you take it

Every setting has been run against 4.5 years of real price action. You see the worst historical stretch before you commit.

03

Market conditions stop deciding your month

When the breakout bot stalls in chop, the mean-reversion bot is doing its job. Diversification across different market conditions, not just instruments.

04

It runs while you work

Bots trade the open whether or not you are at the desk. This is why traders with jobs use them.

05

Risk limits are enforced, not remembered

Contract caps, daily loss limits and drawdown thresholds are configured once and applied every time, whether they came from a prop firm or from you.

06

The same portfolio scales without more effort

One signal, up to 20 accounts. Running ten accounts takes the same attention as running one.

4.5 yrs backtested - 586 settings - 13 bots

Every combination measured before you risk anything.

05 Knowing before you go live

You should know your worst month ahead of time.

The Portfolio Analyzer runs whatever combination you have built against 4.5 years of real historical market data. Not simulated conditions - actual price action. Historical results do not guarantee future results, but they are a far better basis for a decision than optimism.

Net profit and loss

Projected P&L for your exact bot combination across the full backtest window.

Maximum drawdown

Your worst historical peak-to-trough decline. The single most important number on this page, in a cash account or a funded one.

Consistency score

How evenly returns arrive across months and market conditions. A portfolio that made everything in one month is not a portfolio.

Strategy correlation

Where your bots overlap. Two strategies that lose on the same day are one strategy with twice the risk.

Rule compliance check

Validates the portfolio against whatever limits apply: a prop firm's drawdown and daily loss rules, or the ones you set for your own account.

Goal achievement rate

How often this portfolio historically reached its profit target before hitting max drawdown. If you are running an evaluation, this is your pass rate. If you are running your own capital, it is your odds of reaching a target without an unacceptable drawdown first.

Trade-level detail

Every entry, exit, profit figure and commission across the entire backtest window. Nothing aggregated away.

06 The bots

Thirteen strategies. Every market condition.

Mega ORB Bot

Captures momentum from the opening range breakout. Best in trending, directional mornings with clean price action.

Mega Snapback Bot

Trades mean reversion on overextended moves. Built for choppy, range-bound sessions where breakouts fail.

Mega Scalper Bot

Rapid, low-exposure trades on small price movements. Adds consistency and trade frequency to a portfolio.

10 EMA Bot

Follows the 10 EMA to ride sustained directional moves. Ideal when the market picks a direction and holds it.

NR7 Narrow Range Bot

Detects consolidation and trades the breakout. Best after low-volatility sessions that set up explosive moves.

Volume Spike Bot

Identifies institutional volume spikes and trades alongside them.

Plus seven more

Seven additional strategies covering further trend, reversion and volatility conditions, all included in the same portfolio tooling.

07 Who this is for

Different capital, different goals, same problem.

The trader with their own account

You have capital and a broker, and what you want is for the plan to get executed the same way every session. No profit split, no rules but yours. The portfolio tools work exactly the same; you set the drawdown limits instead of a firm setting them for you.

The trader working through evaluations

You want to pass without a single emotional decision undoing three good weeks. Build against the firm's rules, see your historical goal achievement rate before you pay for the evaluation.

The working professional

You cannot watch the open. A portfolio can. This is the most common reason traders automate.

The trader who has blown accounts before

You know your strategy was not the problem. Rules that are enforced by software rather than remembered under pressure are the fix.

The multi-account trader

You are running several accounts and doing the same thing manually in each. One signal into 20 accounts is the entire reason the Trade Copier exists.

The trader moving from funded to cash

You proved the portfolio where a mistake cost a reset fee. Now you are running the same portfolio on your own capital. Nothing about the tooling changes.

This may not be for you

This is not for you if you are looking for a system that produces returns without work or oversight, if you trade crypto, forex or equities rather than futures, or if you are unwilling to run Windows - NinjaTrader 8 requires it, natively or through a VPS.

08 Scaling

One signal. Copy up to twenty accounts.

Once a portfolio works, running it in one account and running it in fifteen takes the same amount of your attention. The Trade Copier mirrors a single signal from your leader account into up to 20 follower accounts in under 10 milliseconds. Funded accounts, cash accounts, or a mix - NinjaTrader 8 holds multiple broker connections at once, so different firms and different brokers all run from one platform.

Independent sizing per account

Each account carries its own position size, contract limit and risk parameters while sharing the same signal. A $50k evaluation and a $250k cash account can follow the same portfolio at appropriate size.

Trade Copier protection

A stop and target must exist before a copy executes. If protection is missing, all followers auto-flatten simultaneously.

Two copy modes

Orders mode for tight synchronization with matching entries, stops and targets. Executions mode for maximum speed where minor slippage is acceptable.

09 Common questions

What traders ask before they start.

Do I need a funded account to use this?

No. The bots and tools run identically in your own futures-enabled account through brokers like NinjaTrader Brokerage, Schwab, Tradovate or Interactive Brokers. Funded accounts are highly recommended to start, not a requirement. Many members run both.

Do I need trading experience?

No. The Portfolio Builder and the 30-day workshop are built for people starting from zero. No coding, no prior trading background required.

What platform do the bots run on?

NinjaTrader 8 on Windows. NinjaTrader is free to download. Most traders use a VPS at $30 or more a month so bots keep running without tying up a personal computer.

Can I use a Mac?

NinjaTrader 8 requires Windows. Some Mac traders use Parallels or Boot Camp; most use a Windows VPS instead.

Do I need to write code?

No. All {s{custom_values.settings_count}} settings ship pre-configured. Everything is adjusted through the interface.

How is my own account different from a funded one in the tools?

Only in which rule set you apply. For a funded account the Builder enforces the firm's drawdown caps, contract limits and daily loss rules. For a cash account you set those limits yourself, and the Builder enforces yours instead. The bots, settings, analysis and copier are identical.

Which prop firms are supported?

Any futures prop firm running NinjaTrader 8, including Apex Trader Funding, Lucid Trading, BluSky, TakeProfit and Tradeify. The Portfolio Builder lets you configure settings for any firm's specific rules. Topstep no longer supports NinjaTrader, so the systems are not compatible there.

How accurate is the backtest data?

The Analyzer runs against 4.5 years of real historical market data, not simulated conditions. Results reflect actual price action. Past performance does not guarantee future results.

What if a bot behaves unexpectedly once live?

The Portfolio Tracker compares live results against historical benchmarks and flags anomalies automatically. Most traders check it a few times a week rather than daily.

Can I cancel?

Yes. The full membership is month to month with no long-term contract.
